Question:

After her husband’s family breaks their fast, they sit around the television and watch the dramas.  She prevents her daughter but she sees her father watching and wants to watch too.  What should she do?

Answer:

It reminds me on the way to the studio I saw billboards and advertisements for parties with singers and dancers in the evenings of Ramadan.  Then I realized that Allah Subhanna wa Taalla locks up the shayateen(satan), but what kind of shayateen? Those from the jinn while the satans from the humans are everywhere and they are in competition with us.  The month of Ramadan is the month of competition toward achieving many good deeds while there are people planning to ruin this month of Ramadan by increasing their production of the filth to ruin our fasting.  People say ruin it, why, when it is just a video, or a program, or a drama.  You don’t know that it ruins your fasting!  The Prophet  said,
قال النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم : ( مَنْ لَمْ يَدَعْ قَوْلَ الزُّورِ وَالْعَمَلَ بِهِ وَالْجَهْلَ فَلَيْسَ لِلَّهِ حَاجَةٌ أَنْ يَدَعَ طَعَامَهُ وَشَرَابَهُ ) رواه البخاري
The Messenger   said: “Whoever does not give up speaking falsehood and acting accordingly, and ignorance, Allaah has no need of him giving up his food and drink.” Al Bukhary
This precious time of Ramadan especially the nights are a time for praying the qiyam, for praying the taraweeah (night prayers in Ramadan).  The Prophet said whosoever witnesses the prayer with his iman (faith) until he finishes the night prayer, it will be recorded that he prayed the entire night.  Instead we are wasting this opportunity to sit in front of this idol and watch the things Allah has prohibited, what Allah has ordered us to lower out gaze from on this box.  Is there any movie that doesn’t have women showing their awra*?  Is there any movie that doesn’t have music, songs and telling lies?  I told you before that there was a married couple who were performing a play.  They performed it every single day   for several months he would tell his wife on the stage you are divorced you are divorced you are divorced and they go home and embrace each other thinking they were only acting on the stage and that is different.  They are such great losers.  Concerning divorce if you say seriously or jokingly it is in effect.  So he divorced his wife 10,000 times not just two times and he is still embracing her, having children with her because he thinks he is still married to her and that was just acting.  The amount of lies represented in one movie is enough to ruin the fasting of a whole day.  Allah Subhanna wa Taala says;
Sura An Nur(24:30,31)
قُلْ لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ يَغُضُّوا مِنْ أَبْصَارِهِمْ وَيَحْفَظُوا فُرُوجَهُمْ ذَلِكَ أَزْكَى لَهُمْ إِنَّ اللَّهَ خَبِيرٌ بِمَا يَصْنَعُونَ (30) وَقُلْ لِلْمُؤْمِنَاتِ يَغْضُضْنَ مِنْ أَبْصَارِهِنَّ وَيَحْفَظْنَ فُرُوجَهُنَّ وَلا يُبْدِينَ زِينَتَهُنَّ إِلاَّ مَا ظَهَرَ مِنْهَا وَلْيَضْرِبْنَ بِخُمُرِهِنَّ عَلَى جُيُوبِهِنَّ وَلا يُبْدِينَ زِينَتَهُنَّ إِلاَّ لِبُعُولَتِهِنَّ أَوْ آَبَائِهِنَّ أَوْ آَبَاءِ بُعُولَتِهِنَّ أَوْ أَبْنَائِهِنَّ أَوْ أَبْنَاءِ بُعُولَتِهِنَّ أَوْ إِخْوَانِهِنَّ أَوْ بَنِي إِخْوَانِهِنَّ أَوْ بَنِي أَخَوَاتِهِنَّ أَوْ نِسَائِهِنَّ أَوْ مَا مَلَكَتْ أَيْمَانُهُنَّ أَوِ التَّابِعِينَ غَيْرِ أُولِي الإِرْبَةِ مِنَ الرِّجَالِ أَوِ الطِّفْلِ الَّذِينَ لَمْ يَظْهَرُوا عَلَى عَوْرَاتِ النِّسَاءِ وَلا يَضْرِبْنَ بِأَرْجُلِهِنَّ لِيُعْلَمَ مَا يُخْفِينَ مِنْ زِينَتِهِنَّ وَتُوبُوا إِلَى اللَّهِ جَمِيعًا أَيُّهَا الْمُؤْمِنُونَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُونَ (31)

Tell the believing men to lower their gaze (from looking at forbidden things), and protect their private parts (from illegal sexual acts, etc.). That is purer for them. Verily, Allâh is All-Aware of what they do(30)And tell the believing women to lower their gaze (from looking at forbidden things), and protect their private parts (from illegal sexual acts, etc.) and not to show off their adornment except only that which is apparent (like palms of hands or one eye or both eyes for necessity to see the way, or outer dress like veil, gloves, head-cover, apron, etc.), and to draw their veils all over Juyubihinna (i.e. their bodies, faces, necks and bosoms, etc.) and not to reveal their adornment except to their husbands, their fathers, their husband's fathers, their sons, their husband's sons, their brothers or their brother's sons, or their sister's sons, or their (Muslim) women (i.e. their sisters in Islâm), or the (female) slaves whom their right hands possess, or old male servants who lack vigour, or small children who have no sense of the shame of sex. And let them not stamp their feet so as to reveal what they hide of their adornment. And all of you beg Allâh to forgive you all, O believers, that you may be successful.(31)

It is the first step in guarding the chastity for men and for women.  So we must lower our gaze from looking at what Allah has prohibited.  Don’t tell me that nowadays they make series where the woman appears wearing hijab.  In some religious program the presenter is wearing hijab** but she has full make-up.  Is it permitted for you to look at her? No it isn’t. That is why I feel sorry when I see some scholars or ulema sitting before women presenters hosting them in a show wearing full make-up, plucking their eyebrows and talking about the religion.  They are talking about religion?  What religion are you addressing in this program?  The deen(religion) is whole and is not to be divided.  Religious commitment has its own sweetness. When you realize that you are doing this for the sake of Allah then you enjoy every minute obeying Allah Subhanna wa Talla and abstaining from anything that could gain Allah’s wrath or anger.  Ramadan is a beautiful opportunity to spend the day in fasting, reciting Quran and in the evening praying taraweeah.  Then you take a nap and rest for some time because you have to work.  We still work in Ramadan not like in some countries where Ramadan approaches and this means it is the time of sleep.  Then, they pray taraweeah, eat a lot and watch a lot of movies and series throughout the entire night and sleep sometimes before Fajr and then sleep until noon.  What about work?  They say, how can you work in Ramadan?  Allah Subhanna wa Taala didn’t ordain that at all or is he ever happy with that.  Ramadan is the month of victories.  Mecca was opened in Ramadan.  The great defeat of Israel in this modern era was in the month of Ramadan.  So many battles that the Muslims fought against the believers was in the month of Ramadan so we should not think the month of Ramadan is a time for play where we watch the belly dancers in the evening because we have been fasting all day long.  I swear by Allah in whose hand is my soul, those activities ruin your fasting.  Those who do not pray yet they fast, don’t bother because one who isn’t praying is not required to fast as they are not considered Muslims.  Islam is a beautiful gift.  You take it all and practice as much as you can.  We said in the beginning this is the time for those who have adopted bad habits to quit and to repent.  I give the example of smoking.  We give up what is unlawful for 12, 13, 16 hours more or less so can’t you extend this to abstain from what is haram forever.  So let’s make this Ramadan our best Ramadan and a turning point in our lives.   Allah Subhanna wa Taalla said,
Sura Al-Isra917:36)
وَلا تَقْفُ مَا لَيْسَ لَكَ بِهِ عِلْمٌ إِنَّ السَّمْعَ وَالْبَصَرَ وَالْفُؤَادَ كُلُّ أُولَئِكَ كَانَ عَنْهُ مَسْئُولاً
And follow not (O man i.e., say not, or do not or witness not, etc.) that of which you have no knowledge (e.g. one's saying: "I have seen," while in fact he has not seen, or "I have heard," while he has not heard). Verily! The hearing, and the sight, and the heart, of each of those you will be questioned (by Allâh).

Indeed what you paid attention to willingly of backbiting, slander, falsehood, love stories whatever you listen to and what you have looked at willingly is just a waste of precious time watching what Allah has prohibited.  Your heart and mind all of that will be questioned on the Day of Judgment so protect those senses that Allah Subhana wa taala gifted you with, especially during this month of Ramadan and make it a great beginning and a turning point in your life.   
*Awra:  That part of the body which it is illegal to keep naked before others.  For men, the aura is from the naval to the knee. For women, the aura is the entire body except the hands and face.
